Supreme Court opening to mean supreme politics?

With Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor announcing here retirement from the US Supreme Court, we will get the priviledge of seeing perhaps one of the greatest political events of our time. The ultra conservatives (i.e. the bible beaters or the religious wrong) want an ultra conservative to mirror their views (can you say Yikes??????), while liberals want someone very liberal with their views (another Yikes!).

The ultra right wingers criticizing possible Bush choice Attorney General Gonzalez was kind of a surprise, but I loved it when the President basically told them to back off the criticism of him. I don't think Gonzalez would be a bad choice. Democrats want someone more liberal (yeah, good luck with that one fellas, it ain't going to happen). I personally don't think another conservative would be a bad thing necessarily, as long as its a moderate and not a bible beater. I wonder if Bush will feel pressure to appoint another woman to the court or not. That will be interesting to see.

One thing is for sure- the hearings will be long and drawn out (and for a supreme court justice they should be), bringing to mind the colorful hearings on Clarence Thomas and the one and only Robert Bork. If Bush nomiates an ultra conservative, look for Democrats to use the filibuster to try and stop it.

Stay tuned..............

The "Duke" in deep shit?

Good ol Duke Cunningham of California, who just a few weeks ago was praised by some Republicans when news of this controversy first aired, are strangely silent now that "Duke" is the subject of some pretty serious investigations by the federal government. Check out the link below for an article on Cunningham's home and boat being searched, along with the offices of the defense contractor MZM that he allegedly helped.

You can also read my previous post about good ol Duke for more info. I think you can pretty much rule out the Duke running again for anything other than perhaps convict of the year (if convicted of course).

No word from Rush or Sean yet if this is another example of the feared "liberal media" sensationalizing this whole thing.
